API error responses should use JSON and preserve Laravel validation behavior where applicable. Common response patterns:

Status	Meaning
`400`	Invalid request state
`401`	Missing or invalid authentication
`403`	Authenticated user cannot access the resource
`404`	Resource not found
`422`	Validation failed
`500`	Unexpected server error

Validation errors include a top-level message and field-level errors.
